[15 th Melakartha Ragam]
Singing of this ragam evokes shantha (peace) rasa (rasam) to the listeners. When a song contains all these notes, or if that songs root lies in these notes then we can say that its based on this (MayamalavaGowla ) ragam. Sri Purandara Dasa, who is considered as the father of Carnatic music has introduced mayamalavagowla ragam as the basic scale for music instructions. The kriti "Deva deva kalayamithy " composed by Swathi Thirunal, is based on this ragam.
"Tum Mile tho mile gaya" is a wonder full song from the film Tum Mile. This song was composed based on carnatic raga "Haikamboji" but its actually composed based on some hindustani (i.e., in northern part). It is same as the major scale note in Western music .i.e., C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C respectively (i.e., C Major scale). This ragam is called as the king of all other ragams in Carnatic music. Instead of shuddha madhyamam(Ma1)[F], if we replace this with prathi madhyamam (Ma2)[F#] the ragam will change to Mecha kalyani ragam (65 th Melakartha Ragam). Some few composition based on this ragams are shown below.
