Mayamalavagowla Ragam

arohanam   : Sa Re1 Ga3 Ma1 Pa Dha1 Ni3 Sa
avarohanam : Sa Ni3  Dha1 Pa   Ma1 Ga3 Re1 Sa

In western music, the corresponding arohanam and avarohanam notes can be represented as shown below.

arohanam   : C   C#   E   F   G   G#   B   C

avarohanam : C   B   G#   G   F   E   C#   C

[15 th Melakartha Ragam]

Singing of this ragam evokes shantha (peace) rasa (rasam) to the listeners. When a song contains all these notes, or if that songs root lies in these notes then we can say that its based on this (MayamalavaGowla ) ragam. Sri Purandara Dasa, who is considered as the father of Carnatic music has introduced mayamalavagowla ragam as the basic scale for music instructions. The kriti "Deva deva kalayamithy " composed by Swathi Thirunal, is based on this ragam.
